Friendship is built on many things.
The first element is trust.
It is the foundation upon which everything else is constructed.
And friendship is the basis of all relationships that come after.
It does not matter how close you are or how far away.
It does not matter the time between conversations or the level of communication.
Friends know each other, support each other, and care for each other.
This does not mean that they have to be available all the time.
Or that they always agree with each other.
Or that they support everything about each other.
Sometimes, the most caring thing a friend can do is to tell their friend when they feel something is off.
To share their misgivings.
To call them on their BS.
Real friendship can survive all of that.
And over the years, as they see others through the best and toughest of times, the closeness grows even greater.
It becomes hard to imagine one’s life without one’s friend.
Yes, being friends is not always easy.
Yes, sometimes it involves fights and disagreements.
Yet when our hearts are open to truly caring about the other person, we get past all that.
And we are richer for the growth we experienced.
And to know that your friendship is built on something more than mutual convenience, is something quite special indeed.
